Dear Athletes!
Having just returned this morning from working at the ING Georgia Marathon, it is clear that this sport is booming but not without unique challenges!
You might've heard about the tornado that slammed into the top of downtown Atlanta recently (first one ever in the downtown area). There race director, Victoria Seahorn had to have the event of 14,000+ relocate their huge and successful Race Expo (this is an almost unheard of last second change), their start and finish line (as late as 3pm the day prior the City officials were compelled to adjust the course) and created flats for several of the wheelchair competitors (broken glass on the nearby streets that had tumbled overnight as compared to on the course!) that morning before the race! In spite of all of that craziness, the participants, volunteers and event staff pulled together and made it work for everyone! I spotted David Manthey (Runner's Edge of the Rockies) running in the half marathon, in spite of a nagging injury, and bet he'd recommend the weekend to all of you!
Suddenly it's April and after a huge turnout for the Runnin' of the Green, people are signing up in droves for the next batch of races in April and May!
From the Iron Girl 5K at Denver's City Park in early May (a great event for guys to be volunteers for!) or the myriad of other fun events earlier and later, I hope you'll consider three opportunities that are on the weekend of May 18th: the Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon (limited this year for 700), Half marathon (limited to 3000) or the 5 Person Relay (limited to 600 teams). We have 40 charity partners that you have the additional option to sign up and support (a fun way to do it for a bigger reason!).
For those of you that prefer walking in events, I discovered a new site www.Topictalkwalks.com that a friend, Fran Rew has developed that might be right down your alley. Check it out!
I caught up with three friends in Atlanta as well at the ING Georgia Marathon and so continue to add to my favorite book list. Here are a couple more (be on the lookout for a third this fall for a new book written by Patti Catalano Dillon as well!)
Nancy Clark's easy to read best-seller Nancy Clark's Food Guide For Marathoners
Grete Waitz's Run Your First Marathon. By the way, those of you that knew that Grete has been battling cancer, I am very happy to report that she's in wonderful spirits, back to working out and all of the money from her book sales is going to charity (if you didn't happen to know, she won the New York Marathon 9 times and got the silver in the LA Olympic marathon in '84). She is a truly amazing person!
Have a great April!

Miles for Miracles - May 3
![]()
Prestige Miracles Foundation, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization established by agents of Prestige Real Estate Group, presents its 8th annual Miles for Miracles 5K Run-Walk, set for May 3rd at Invesco Field.
The Mile for Miracles 5k run is a strong tradition, one that always accomplishes so much good for Colorado families.
Miles for Miracles got its start in 2000, when Prestige agents came together in support of one-year-old Jamie Leigh Romano, daughter of Prestige agent Jim Romano, who had been diagnosed with childhood Leukemia. Agents carried out the first run as a means of supporting the family’s special needs as they battled for their daughter’s life.
Jamie Leigh won that battle (she’ll be ten this year) and will be back as a runner at Miles for Miracles. Half of the race’s proceeds are given to The Children’s Hospital, where Jamie was treated; the rest is dispersed through Prestige Miracles Foundation to Denver area families requiring support during periods of medical or other emergencies.
According to Leeann Iacino, President of Prestige, Prestige Miracles Foundation raised more than $180,000 last year, dispersed to 25 area families and seven charities, including Children’s.
The Race, set for 8 a.m. Saturday, May 3, leaves Invesco for a spectacular 5-K run along the Platte River Trail beside downtown Denver, then returns to the Stadium, where runners watch their own arrival broadcast on the JumboTron. In addition to the regular 5K race, families can enter their kids in a special kids’ race around Invesco.
Broncos Cheerleaders will be on hand to sign autographs; along with Broncos Junior Cheerleaders cheering for runners, KCNC News 4’s anchor Tom Mustin will be honorary master of ceremonies, and over 500 pieces of Artwork created by local area 3rd graders will be on display.
Register in advance, $25 for adults ($35.00 race day), $10 for kids 12-and-under, on line at www.bkbltd.com or at www.PrestigeMiraclesFoundation.org

Each year, the non-profit Friends of AirLife hosts the Annual AirLife Memorial Run/Walk in honor of the everyday heroes in EMS and those who have passed on. The race was created in memory of Pete Albplanalp, Beth Barber, Leslie Feldmann and Julie Olmstead, who died on December 14, 2007, in a helicopter crash and related car accident. Since its inception, the race has evolved to include honoring the fallen heroes of air medical, EMS, fire and police, as well as beloved Friends of AirLife founder, Jim Ulrich. Donations are used to maintain the AirLife Memorial Park located at the site of the helicopter crash; support Colorado EMS education through the Jim Ulrich Scholarship Fund; fund the Jim Ulrich Silver Falcon Award recognizing local EMS leaders; and provide charitable assistance to families of EMS professionals who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Are you looking for a creative new workout to tune up your season? Try this one - the RETURN TRIP TIME TRIAL. To set it up, select your total time based on your base and target race distance. For example, as we prepare for Boston, we've been performing this workout as a 2 - 2 1/2 hr total run. For this example, let's assume you're going with a 2 hr total run (after warm-up).
- Select a course that is relatively similar out and back. This workout loses it's flare if done uphill one way or the other. Rollers are fantastic.
- Set your target pace (this is where a GPS is a nice addition) going out. If no GPS available, you're looking to run with a "slight push," but should never feel that you're "pressing" at any point on the way out.
- Stretch yourself by extending your "out" portion to 62-64 minutes before turning around.
- Then, with the legs a bit tired, turn around at bring it home at approximately 10-30 seconds/mi off of race pace. If no GPS available, you're trying to simply get back to your starting point in the remaining 56-58 minutes available before the clock strikes "midnight" at the 2 hour mark.
This workout will not only provide you with some nice mileage, but will also create an extended tempo-like run. By performing it on the back half of the run, you'll effectively create pseudo race day conditions (and results). Go get 'em!
