2008 January E-Newsletter

Dear Athletes!

Our Newsletter Editor, Coreen Mazzocchi, is heading to Italy with her husband to be with family over the Holidays and take some well-earned time off! To keep pace with her, we're providing this January edition early!

Most New Year columns reflect on the past year and anticipate the future. I suppose we're no different in that tradition but I'd rather imagine that each of you made headway personally and professionally, took your fitness up another notch, and have set reasonable and achievable goals for 2008.  On a personal level, I'm wrestling with the idea to run Boston if I can find a magic cure for my right hamstring! We'll see.

Hopefully you noticed the "Friends For Free" campaign by the Post News Colorado Colfax Marathon, Half Marathon and Marathon Relay on May 18, 2008. Evidently it's working since the early signups are way ahead of this time last year, and maybe the better courses are resonating! There's also a program being launched in January to persuade 5 person relay teams to get in the game. For more info email John Tope, Director of Runner Relations, or call him at 303-770-9600.

Finally, many thanks to those of you that reached deep and financially supported the Kipture Primary School Foundation this year. As an update, we've finished the library and kitchen, and work has begun on the roof repairs and putting glass in windows.  It's the small things that make a huge difference. Our foundation President, Peter Tanui, is in Kapsabet, Kenya right now supervising the improvements. It's not too late to make a charitable contribution! If you want to help, send your check by December 31st made payable to: Kipture Primary School Foundation, PO Box 4184, Englewood, CO 80155. It is a 501 (c)3 non-profit (Federal Tax Exempt EIN # is 47-0935210).

Enough fundraising! Have a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! Thanks for being out there at the events and allowing us to be a part of your life!

The Wellness Wizard

Resolve to Stop Resolving
By Brad Cooper - US Corporate Wellness

New Year's is just around the corner, and you know what that means. Yup - broken resolutions about 4 weeks later (if we're lucky).  That's the problem with resolutions - they imply a "should" or "would like to" component.  And we'd probably all have to admit those don't tend to last very long.

Instead, let's put the resolutions aside this year and DECIDE!  You want to lose 5 pounds?  Decide to do it and then do!  You're thinking intervals would make a difference in your racing this year? Make the decision and put them in your calendar. Done!

Regardless of the target, make a decision, not a resolution. And 2008 just might be your best year yet.

What if there was a way to improve your employees’ health and your company's bottom line?                                                                                           Go to www.USCorporateWellness.com for a free 45 day trial and an intro video.

Active at Altitude

Melody Fairchild chooses Active at Altitude for 2008 high school girls running camps location

Active at Altitude, the unique residential training facility near Estes Park in Colorado, has been chosen by Melody Fairchild to host her 2008 summer running camps. The camps are wonderful training opportunities for girls ages 14-19 to be coached by arguably the best high school female athlete the USA has ever produced, having been the first high school girl to break 10 minutes for 2 miles.  Melody  says: " I am delighted to have discovered Active at Altitude and to have an opportunity to work with owner Terry and his wife Jacqui.  The location of their center, with trail access galore and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, is ideal for developing the strength and conditioning for successful distance running and the inspiration of the surrounding wilderness is just what runners need, to transcend perceived limitations and discover uncharted territory within." Active at Altitude is a new venture owned and managed by English athlete and coach Terry Chiplin.  Terry adds: "We are delighted to have been chosen by Melody as the location for her 2008 summer training camps. Estes Park has so much to offer, from 7,500 feet of elevation to mountain trails almost on your doorstep. This is a paradise for training at altitude.  We see these camps with Melody as another step towards having Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park recognised as one of the best altitude training destinations for endurance athletes not only from Colorado and the USA, but all over the World."
There are 2 camps scheduled for 2008 – July 14-21 and August 9-16.  The camps are well priced at $950.00 per person - space is limited to 20 participants per camp. For further information visit www.fairchildsportscamps.com, email Melody, or call 303-818-8063.  Or email Terry Chiplin, or call 970 586 4432.
