Dear Athletes!
With a stunning 2100+ pounding the steps at the American Lung Association's Run the Republic Stair Climb last weekend, it's clear that Colorado is not waiting for warm weather! Plus, the Lung Association announced their Charity Partnership with the Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon at the same time! If you're sitting on the fence as to participating in Colfax Marathon, Half Marathon or 5 Person Relay on 18 May, take a look at the charity Partner program on the web site and look over the 24+ Charity Partners. One of 'em is bound to appeal to you and it's a fun way to get into the game!
Last month's Book List excluded several books that should be on your list, I think:
- Ann Audain's Uncommon Heart
- Matt Fitzgerald's Brain Training For Runners
- Adam Chase and Nancy Hobb's Ultimate Guide to Trail Running
I'm sure I'm neglecting yet another friend's book but each of the above should've been on my first list so there you are!
Two more races that are coming up in the near term: the low key That Dam Run on top of Cherry Creek Dam (Sunday Mar 2nd at 9am...might be a light snow but it WILL be fast!) and the big-time Runnin' of the Green 7K in downtown Denver on March 16th! Our calendar lists the rest!
John Raveling of Boulder Running Company, Littleton is again chairing the search committee for the 2nd Annual Colorado Running Hall of Fame. The installation of new members will be the week of the Colfax Marathon at the Denver Athletic Club. If you have a candidate in mind, please email him so the proper application can be submitted raveling45@aol.com
Finally, if you have children that look for events in running JUST for them, this years Post-News Colorado Colfax "Marathon Mile" will be on Saturday, May 17th at Denver's City Park and signup will start in selected stores (only for the Kid's Mile) by mid March. Again, go to the Kid's Miler Program link to start the wheels rolling!
My best to each of you and may your training be safe, fun and less of a struggle each day!

Miles for Miracles - May 3
![]()
Prestige Miracles Foundation, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization established by agents of Prestige Real Estate Group, presents its 8th annual Miles for Miracles 5K Run-Walk, set for May 3rd at Invesco Field.
The Mile for Miracles 5k run is a strong tradition, one that always accomplishes so much good for Colorado families.
Miles for Miracles got its start in 2000, when Prestige agents came together in support of one-year-old Jamie Leigh Romano, daughter of Prestige agent Jim Romano, who had been diagnosed with childhood Leukemia. Agents carried out the first run as a means of supporting the family’s special needs as they battled for their daughter’s life.
Jamie Leigh won that battle (she’ll be ten this year) and will be back as a runner at Miles for Miracles. Half of the race’s proceeds are given to The Children’s Hospital, where Jamie was treated; the rest is dispersed through Prestige Miracles Foundation to Denver area families requiring support during periods of medical or other emergencies.
According to Leeann Iacino, President of Prestige, Prestige Miracles Foundation raised more than $180,000 last year, dispersed to 25 area families and seven charities, including Children’s.
The Race, set for 8 a.m. Saturday, May 3, leaves Invesco for a spectacular 5-K run along the Platte River Trail beside downtown Denver, then returns to the Stadium, where runners watch their own arrival broadcast on the JumboTron. In addition to the regular 5K race, families can enter their kids in a special kids’ race around Invesco.
Broncos Cheerleaders will be on hand to sign autographs; along with Broncos Junior Cheerleaders cheering for runners, KCNC News 4’s anchor Tom Mustin will be honorary master of ceremonies, and over 500 pieces of Artwork created by local area 3rd graders will be on display.
Register in advance, $25 for adults ($35.00 race day), $10 for kids 12-and-under, on line at www.bkbltd.com or at www.PrestigeMiraclesFoundation.org

Awful Race Results - Fantastic Outcome
By Brad Cooper - US Corporate Wellness
Have you had one of those races lately? One
where you trained hard, did everything according to plan, and walked away
feeling like you'd failed? Yeah - me too (very recently, in fact). What a
disaster, right? But, if we take a couple of steps in the right direction,
it could have a fantastic outcome in the long run (sorry - couldn't
resist)...
- Get mad. That's fine. Don't pretend to be immune from disappointment. You worked hard, and discouraging results are just that - discouraging!
- Then, after 24 hrs or so, sit down for a little review with yourself, your journal, your friend, your coach and make some specific notes (with "specific" being the key word) about what might have caused the outcome to be less than optimal (or just plain bad)
- From that review, identify at least 1 (but not too many) things you're going to do differently - and how/when you're going to apply those. You've heard it said "hope is not a strategy," and that applies as much to successful running as it does to business strategy
- Implement - soon.
We are our own research lab. As much literature as there is on training, nutrition, racing, etc - we are still individuals, with individual differences. Mistakes are inherent to who we are - just don't keep making the same ones over and over and over as you grow in your running pursuits. So here's to awful races... and fantastic outcomes!
