Dear Runners and Walkers,

First, a quick promo message: consider joining Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson's Relay Team over the weekend of 20 May. All the proceeds from your team membership fee go directly to the Colorado Kids program. Second, I want to mention that the Air Life Memorial 5K/10K is on the same weekend of Colfax, and my late friend Jim Ulrich was the mainstay of that event and will be missed this year especially. Each individual involved in that event has a heart of gold and truly provide for our community! Having said that, Jim fits into my next topic.

Humble pie? Big piece...maybe the whole pie! Some of you know that I ran the ING Enschede Marathon in the Netherlands last month in memory of my friend Jim Ulrich. Thanks to many of you we raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. That reason kept me going when the 70 degree weather and lack of taking the sports drink brought me almost to my knees after 21 miles!

Those of you that train and run or walk in marathons have earned my enduring respect. I had simply erased from my memory the incredible power and scope of the marathon experience. If you're heading to Colorado Marathon in Ft Collins this weekend or doing the Colfax Marathon on 20 May, I salute you! Here's the short version of my marathon story (we marathoners are much worse than other distance runners in spinning a story ad nauseum!).

I "forgot" the basics preached and written about by my friends the Manthey's at Runner's Edge of the Rockies, Jeff Galloway and his wonderful program, and so many others. Since I couldn't get the sports drink the event offered, I didn't train with one and decided to do without (no, I didn't want to be encumbered with a belt, little bottles of some other drink or anything else). Stupid. The last 5 miles for me were ugly and the ONLY thing that kept me going was the memory of my friend and the great spectators! The moral of the story: believe what your training program coaches tell you. Instead of humble pie you'll be served something far more palatable!

Thanks for listening and continued success in your training and racing!

Air Life Memorial 10K and 5K - May 20

Tired of races whose views include city streets with pavement radiating heat and pain to your feet and knees?  Looking for a race that allows you to beat your personal best? How about the 10th Anniversary of the Air Life Memorial 10k/5k Run/5k Walk on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at The Hudson Gardens & Event Center in Littleton.  Hudson Gardens makes a beautiful backdrop for the start of the race as runners and walkers kick off the day surrounded by EMS vehicles from across the metro area. To register or volunteer for the event go to www.denverairlife.com or call the event hotline at 303-788-5536

Proceeds from this year’s event are dedicated to the maintenance of the Air Life Memorial Park and EMS education, including the Jim Ulrich Silver Falcon EMS Award, and assistance for the families of EMS personnel who are injured or killed in the line of duty.

Colorado Colfax Marathon -  May 20

Second Annual Colorado Colfax Marathon boasts updated course; more bands

The 2007 Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon promises to be even better than the first. Although we couldn’t take ALL the hills out of Lakewood , we have changed the location of the finish to the front of Colorado Mills, reducing the final climb by a half mile! Also new this year, we will be spending more time in the recently completed University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and we’ll be heading off Colfax around picturesque Sloan’s Lake.

This year's course will also be highlighted by 16 Motivation Stations - hubs for cheering, entertainment and fun! Located every 1-2 miles along the course, the Motivation Stations will showcase 32 local entertainers to keep runners movin' and groovin' as they make their way down historic Colfax Avenue. Whether you're into surf rock with an attitude, jazz, blues, new age or indie rock, there is something for everyone.

For more information on this community celebration or to register for the marathon, half marathon or 5-person team relay (with individual legs of 10K, 5K, 10K, 5K, and a final 12K) visit www.coloradocolfaxmarathon.org
