2007 October E-Newsletter

Dear Athletes!

You know fall is here when you break out the tights, gloves and hats! My dog Aussie seems to thrive in the low 40's and I really think it makes the training easier once you get warmed up a little!

Lots of updates below so read away:

1. The Mile High United Way Turkey Trot 4 Mile on November 22nd will GIVE EVERY participant an IPICO Sportag™ to tie to their shoe and wear in the event! You will be able to pick up your bib number, your t-shirt, and the scoring tag when registration opens up in the stores in November. If you sign up online, it'll be given to you on event morning! The Sportag™ will be yours to keep as a souvenir and may have some fun features to it, so don't throw it away!

2. The BKB Holiday 5K Race Series rolls out with 4 races in Denver's Washington Park starting on October 31st, to benefit the Prostate Cancer Educational Council. All four events will be part of the Sanofi Aventis PACE Race Series and we're excited to announce that Runner's Roost Denver will be our presenting sponsor. Each event will feature a long-sleeved technical shirt and fun awards thanks to the Roost!

3. Want to test yourself over a mile? Check out the American Lung Association's Run the 'Rocks on Sunday October 14th.

4. Visit the Denver Marathon Expo on Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13, and find out the latest course changes for the May 18, 2008 Post-News Colorado Colfax Marathon, Half Marathon and 5 Person Relay!

5. We're helping out with the first National Runner Survey Project being conducted by Running USA and the Road Runners Club of America. How many years has the average runner been running in Colorado? What are the top 3 factors that runners use for selecting a race? What percentage of US runners have college degrees? The results will give us a more accurate snapshot of runners and walkers from all over the country. Your anonymous responses will help us plan, market and build the sport both locally and nationally. Up to now the running community has had to rely on organizations outside of the sport to define ‘runners’ and the result was not very representative. Our website of the month, listed below, takes you to this survey. Feel free to skip over questions that you don’t like or don’t have time for. Whatever sections you complete will be used.

6. Sally Edward's Heartzones National Conference: Sally Edwards, one of the most respected people in the health and fitness industry (prolific author and speaker who has changed so many lives moving them from the couch to a healthy and active lifestyle) will be having her annual conference at University of Denver in November. Check out the link and consider attending!

7. Brad Cooper, CEO of US Corporate Wellness and our "Wellness Wizard", provides a look below at keeping a journal. Read the latest edition of the Wellness Wizard and don't forget the Workshop on October 10th. If you'd like to attend at a big BKB discount, email Brad for information.

See you on the roads!

A slow steady energy supply, just the best for endurance sports!

Read what runner Lorraine Hardaway from Florida has to say about A.C.T. “Using A.C.T., I am amazed at the energy I have for my training runs and especially my races. I was drinking water or Gatorade previously before a race or workout and I can tell a big difference in my energy level. The biggest difference I feel is in endurance. Usually after an hour or so I get tired and the last two long races I finished with almost as much energy as when I started. My recovery has also been better than before I used A.C.T.”  Lorraine has just improved her half marathon PR by 12 minutes after using A.C.T. for just one month!

Why Journal?

Last month we mentioned journalizing as a valuable tool.  But why?  What difference does it make whether you record your daily workouts or not?  Well, I'm glad you asked.  Here are a few reasons worth a second look:

·         Those who don't know history are...  Yup!  You guessed it.  One of the most valuable aspects of a journal is to be able to go back and review the previous week, month or season.  Take a look at what worked (and what didn't).  You just had the best race of the year - so what did you do leading up to it in reference to rest, speed work, and mileage?  On the other end of the spectrum, you can see what didn't work when your race falls apart before your eyes.

·         Injury Prevention - As a Physical Therapist, it's usually (90% of the time) pretty straight-forward as to why other people get injured.  But, of course, it never makes sense when I get injured!  However, a cursory review of my journal usually clears the fog and helps decrease the chances of making the same mistake the next time around.

·         Change Agent - It's easy to get into a rut of running the same routes, same workouts and same schedules week after week.  The simple process of journalizing naturally nudges you toward identifying weekly goals based on the previous week's workouts and upcoming week's events.

·         Bonus Points - You know the old saying about a tree falling in the forest and nobody hearing it?  Well, if a runner puts in 8 miles but doesn't write it down or mention it to anyone, did it really actually happen?  Believe it or not, your co-worker, spouse, friends, kids, etc aren't really all that excited about that 7 mile run with 3 x 4 minute hill fartleks you put in this morning.  But your journal is ALWAYS interested.  The simple act of recording the day extends that pleasure just a little bit longer.

Be Well... and Do Good!
